15 Songs That’ll Make You Want To Travel
Music is an essential part of travel and daily life, but there are just some songs that put you in the mood to go out and get a plane ticket or hit the road. Whether it’s because of the lyrics or the music video, feel the wanderlust from these 15 different songs:
In The Bag: Chic, Casual Island Life
Wrapping up my Curaçao style posts, in this edition of my In The Bag series here’s some travel essentials that are chic and casual to live up that island life. Shot at the Carribbean-meets-Miami-chic Floris Suite Hotel.
Backpack – Herschel Supply
In case you didn’t know yet I’m kind of in love with Herschel Supply Little America backpack. Its spacious (20″ H, 12″ L and 7″ W), lightweight canvas body has two sets of stylish leather straps with magnetic closures, and padded shoulder straps and back. The top flap opens up to the drawcord shut main compartment, which has a padded laptop laptop sleeve inside.
Shoes – United Nude
Make a footwear statement whenever possible. United Nude’s Cuba Elastic Slip On is a colorful and simple silhouette with the brand’s signature elastics, mesh lining and rubber outsole. Can be styled with cotton shorts, dark washed jeans and even swimwear.
Travel Inspiration: The Dushi Willemstad, Curaçao
If you find yourself in Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao there is one local saying you should know, ‘dushi’. Dushi means sweet or nice, even good, and can be applied to everything on the island, even the island itself
From the colorful architecture and delicious food in the capital Willemstad’s neighborhoods of Otrabanda and Punda, to the beaches, hotels and pools of Piscadera Bay, below see photos from my visit to Curaçao this past spring to make you want to visit Willemstad and beyond:
Must View: Beyoncé Exhibit At Rock Hall of Fame
I usually don’t post on solo museum exhibits, but it’s Beyoncé! A fashion exhibit centered on Queen Bey will debut next week at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio in the museum’s main exhibit all in its Legends of Rock section. The exhibit joins iconic pieces from Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.
Yoncé’s exhibit will feature different styles that come from the 2013 Super Bowl performance, the 2012 Met Gala, and four music videos – “Run the World (Girls)”, “Sweet Dreams”, “Single Ladies” and the song that launched her solo career and a personal favorite of mine, “Crazy In Love”. Would’ve been great if some Destiny’s Child styles made it as well, for a full musical stoll down memory lane for any 20-something today.
Travel Inspiration: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
In this edition of Travel Inspiration, see highlights from my trip to Puerto Vallarta that’ll make you want to visit (especially with this hurricane making its way up the East Coast this weekend). Located along the Pacific Ocean’s Bahía de Banderas Bay, I got to experience this Mexican hotspot for a few days last month and explore areas such as Old Vallarta, the resort section, the ocean waters and a little bit of a hidden paradise:
New York Gay Pride Guide 2014
If you’re visiting New York this Pride week, or thinking of making a last minute trip, here’s what you should check out:
Thursday (6/26)
The official kick-off for the weekend is the NYC Pride Rally, which is in its second year and will be at Pier 26 in Tribeca. Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Michelle Visage will host, with a performance with fellow Drag Race star, Sharon Needles, and Australian pop singer Betty Who. Free to the public, starts at 6:30 p.m.
BoiParty’s Penthaus Pride Mega Kick-Off Party (above) will take place at the Copacabana Rooftop. The weekly party has become one of the largest gay Thursday night parties since it started up last year. Hosted by boys from CockyBoys, with DJs Ray Isaac (London), Johnny Dynell (New York), and Philippe Lemot (Germany). $10 cover at the door, no cover with table reservation (which is free to do, with bottles starting at $100). Where To Stay In Provincetown
Everyone should visit Provincetown, Massachusetts at least once, especially if you’re looking for a gay getaway in the north east coast that is not New York City nor Fire Island. I first visited a year ago during Memorial Day weekend, which wasn’t as crowded as during Independence Day weekend or the annual Carnival events (both great times to visit). Once you pick out when you want to visit P’town, you need to figure how to get there (and I already have a guide for that here) and where to stay. Lodging options range from seasonal guest houses to year-round hotels and resorts. Keep in mind the following when booking a stay (based on my article for Passport):
Harbor Hotel Provincetown
Located at the end of Commercial (the main street in town) on the quieter and artful east side of P’town, the Harbor Hotel offers 129 modern guest rooms and suites decked out in green and turquoise. Amenities of this pet-friendly hotel include free Wi-Fi throughout the structure, parking on-site, and a fire-pit (above) out in the front overlooking the sea. The hotel also offers a seasonal outdoor pool with Cabana Bar where several different cocktails and grill options are available. Inside the hotel’s lobby, you’ll find a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast (seasonal), an all-day coffee bar and the popular Whaler Lounge for more eats. 698 Commercial St. Tel: 508-487-1711. www.harborhotelptown.com
The Greatest Travel Selfie Ever
Forget the typical vacation selfie at the beach or club, instead climb to the top of Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro and snap one there. Taking the opportunity of a lifetime, Lee Thompson, a photographer and co-founder of travel group specialist The Flash Pack, obtained special permission to climb to the top of the statue while in Rio covering the World Cup.
See more photos below and a video of the experience exploring inside the famous statue: Read the rest of this entry
Win A Trip To Los Angeles With Bonobos
In anticipation of Bonobos’ new Guideshop opening in Los Angeles on La Brea next month, the menswear brand is hosting a contest for a trip for two to the Golden Coast. Along with the two round-trip airfare tickets to Los Angeles, the winner will get a two-night stay at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and a $1,000 Bonobos wardrobe—you can get a lot of their well known no-diaper-butt pants for that. Enter once now through June 8th.
In case you’re not familiar with the Guideshops, these are stores across eight cities at the moment—which include Boston, Chicago and New York (pictured above)—where you can try on all the styles they have to offer while a Guide (a sales person/stylist in a way) helps you pick out what you want to see. Then you order your items to be delivered right to your home. These Guideshops are great if you’re not familiar with the brand, if you’re traveling or just don’t like to carry shopping bags. Travel Inspiration: Madrid, Spain
As a fan of city travel, one of the cities I fell in love with right away with is Madrid for its culture, architecture and beautiful parks and gardens. Get a taste of Spain’s capital with photos from the central district, which consists of the bustling Puerta del Sol plaza with the Bear and the Madroño Tree statue (below), Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, El Retiro Park, Puerta de Alcalá, Cibeles Palace and the Fountain of Cibeles, the Gran Vía street and its architecture and rooftop statues and more:
