NYFW: Brooks Brothers & Black Fleece SS14

A nice little break from runway shows and shooting street style all day during the tail end of New York Fashion Week, I headed over to Brooks Brothers’ Madison Avenue flagship store for a showroom tour of their Spring/Summer 2014 line, and that of the Thom Browne designed label, Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers.

Brooks Brothers SS14

Sea, surf and sun are the theme, and the line is filled with items inspired by archival photos of Ernest Hemingway and other artists, intellects and jet-setters in The Great Gatsby era and decades following (1920s-50s).

The collection’s beach looks included madras (which was actually introduced to the States by BB), white on white styles, and seersucker and patch patterns.

Travel-ready and day-to-cocktail-hour looks included single and double breasted suits, bold use of red, navy plaid and geo patterns, gingham shirts, leather goods and striped woven ties:

Shimon and Ariel Ovadia, the twin brothers and designers of the three-year-old brand Ovadia & Sons, held their first New York Fashion Week presentation yesterday, which included 26 looks from their spring/summer 2014 collection.

Known for their traditional dress apparel (suits, shirts and ties) and range of basic colors, the brothers proved their versatility with fashions that could go from day to night, and the introduction of the stand out, and very popular (check your Instagrams for #ovadiaandsons), Neoprene motorcycle jackets:

The Ovadia and Sons’ color palette featured black, white and blues with hints of green and tan. Along with the moto jacket, other features of the collection included an indigo denim suit, floral printed shorts and trousers, two-panel sweaters, paint-splattered pants in olive, and various single- and double-breasted jackets:

NYFW: Richard Chai’s Soft Geometrics For SS14

RICHARD CHAI LOVE and Mens Spring/Summer 2014 Runway Show

One of the first big shows to start New York Fashion Week at the Lincoln Center’s tents, Richard Chai‘s Spring/Summer 2014 collection. The show marked the debut of a collaboration between Chai and the leather goods brand, Andrew Marc, on a range of leather jackets and shoes.

Chai’s collection was inspired from soft geo shapes, and for the men’s wear, that translated to seersucker blazers, plaid and pleated shorts, oversized trousers and striped tops. There was a strong use of the essential black, white and blues, but the mustardy shade of cognac on a couple of looks stood out when they emerged.

NYFW & the DETAILS Men’s Accessories Show FW13

Fashion week, a time when designers of all levels showcase their work upcoming lines for either the spring/summer or fall/winter season. You typically have to know someone—or be an editor or buyer for a big name publication or retailer—to get invited to a many runway shows during any fashion week…or of course be a celebrity who’s worn an item from a designer once. However, the streets of the city hosting its fashion week events become runways themselves, even more so than usual. This past weekend kicked off New York Fashion Week, despite some snow blizzard named Nemo.

The Lincoln Center has become the hub for the fashion week events hosted by Mercedes-Benz, the head organizer, since 2010, and after 15 years of being at Bryant Park. While you need a ticket to get into most shows, there was an event open to the public, and for men.

Men’s fashion and lifestyle magazine, DETAILS hosted its first men’s accessories show this past Sunday (Feb. 10). While the publication has hosted runway events to feature various designers over the seasons and years, this was the first time it held one devoted to accessories, and on top of that, all were welcomed without a formal invitation.
