After over 20 years of putting on countless parties for New York’s gays and his visitors, the Chelsea nightlife icon Splash will be closing it’s doors on August 10th. Owner Brian Landache posted on the club’s Facebook page saying it’s the “end of an era, boys!” and the following note making it official:
Mega parties, go-go dancers in showers, and unfortgetale DJs and artists, Splash was legendary and a favorite for many New Yorkers and visitors. In my case, it was my first New York gay nightlife venture (and NYC club for that matter). For others it was much more personal.
Nightlife promoter Justin Luke, who got his start at Splash, shared the following statement after seeing how “powerful and emotional nightlife truly is” from all the touching posts about Splash on his newsfeed:
“Splash Bar wasn’t just a bar, it was an historic location for millions of gay men who spent many a night within its walls. Husbands met. Boyfriends broke up. One night stands were forged. Strong friendships were founded. Drag careers began. Nightlife careers ended. Splash Bar has a permanent place in history, and in the hearts of New Yorkers and tourists from around the world. I’m proud to have started my nightlife career there over four years ago, and I am sad to see it go.”
Historic indeed, along with what Luke said, pop icons preformed at Splash varying from the start or high points of their careers. Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga were among the long list of artists who sang and dance in the former hotspot.
Relive their performances below, and book your trip to New York asap for the final 10 days of Splash starting August 1st!
